Quick answers
Where is Kruger National Park?
Kruger National Park is in South Africa.
Kruger National Park is a huge wildlife reserve in northeastern South Africa, in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. It covers about 19,600 square kilometres and stretches 360 kilometres from north to south. It is named after President Paul Kruger, who is seen as its founder.
The park was first protected in 1898 and became South Africa's first national park in 1926. It is famous for safaris, and it is home to the "Big Five": lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo. It drew close to 2 million visitors in 2024. The park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which links three countries.
A park that kept growing
Parts of the area were protected in 1898 by the government of the South African Republic, and in 1926 the reserve became a national park. Its headquarters are at Skukuza. The park lies next to Zimbabwe in the north and Mozambique in the east. Today it is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which joins Kruger with Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.
Visiting the wild
Visitors drive through the park to spot animals, and nine main gates lead to different camps. The park is also part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, an area UNESCO recognises as a biosphere reserve. Because the animals are wild, visitors must stay in their cars or in safe areas and keep their distance. Rules protect the animals and the people, so listen to park rangers.
