Denmark is a small country in northern Europe, the southernmost of the Scandinavian countries. It is made up of the Jutland Peninsula, which joins Germany, and hundreds of islands between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Its capital is Copenhagen, and about 6 million people live there. Denmark is known for LEGO bricks, Vikings, fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, bicycles everywhere and the cosy feeling Danes call hygge.
On My Earth Toy you can see Nyhavn in Copenhagen, a canal lined with brightly painted houses from the 1600s and old wooden sailing ships. Hans Christian Andersen lived in several of its houses.
Geography and nature
Denmark is very flat and low; its highest natural point is only about 171 metres above sea level. Because it is made of a peninsula and islands, no place in Denmark is more than about 50 kilometres from the sea. The landscape has farmland, beech forests, sandy dunes along the west coast of Jutland and chalk cliffs on islands such as Møn. Strong winds blow off the sea, and wind turbines now produce a large share of Denmark's electricity.
People, languages and culture
Danish is the official language, and most people also speak good English. Most Danes belong to the Lutheran Church of Denmark. Danes cycle a lot, and Copenhagen has wide cycle lanes everywhere. Smørrebrød, open sandwiches on dark rye bread, is a classic lunch. Danish design, from chairs to lamps, is famous for being simple and practical. The Kingdom of Denmark also includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which govern most of their own affairs.
History in a nutshell
From the late 700s, Viking warriors and traders from Denmark sailed across Europe; some settled in England. Harald Bluetooth helped unite Denmark and brought Christianity in the 900s. For a time in the Middle Ages, Denmark led a union with Norway and Sweden. It lost Norway in 1814. Denmark became a constitutional monarchy in 1849, was occupied by Germany in World War II, and joined what is now the European Union in 1973.
