What it means

Where it came from

The colours mix the blue, white and red of the French flag with the Pan-African colours green, yellow and red. The first idea used green, but green was swapped for blue so the flag would not be confused with other flags such as Mali's. Some sources name Naiyia Amina Goudja as the designer.

History

Chad became a self-governing republic within the French Community in 1958 and adopted this flag in 1959, more than a year before full independence on 11 August 1960. The 1962 and 2018 constitutions both describe the same blue, gold and red flag.
