Where it came from
The flag was adopted in 1959, when the former French colony of Middle Congo became a self-governing republic, and was kept at full independence on 15 August 1960. It uses the pan-African colours green, yellow and red, which come from the flag of Ethiopia.
History
Before 1959 the land was the French colony of Middle Congo, part of French Equatorial Africa, and it flew the French tricolour.
After a revolution, the country became the People's Republic of the Congo, a communist state. From 1970 to 1991 it used a red flag inspired by the Soviet flag, with a gold star, a crossed hammer and hoe, and a wreath of palm leaves in the corner.
In 1991 a national conference brought back multi-party democracy, and on 10 June 1991 the original 1959 flag returned.
