What it means
- Blue: water: the rivers, the rain and the Pacific Ocean
- Green: the land, its trees and crops
- Yellow stripe: the sun and its rays
- Five stars: the five provinces at the time of independence, or by another account five main island groups; they are not the Southern Cross
Where it came from
The flag was designed by a New Zealander who taught visual arts at King George VI School in Honiara. Flags of the World names him as John A. Hazeldine, based on his own account. A design contest had been held in 1975, but the winning designs from it were dropped.
History
From 1906 the Solomon Islands, then a British protectorate, used a British Blue Ensign with the protectorate's badge. The new flag was adopted by Royal Warrant on 18 November 1977, and the country became independent on 7 July 1978.
