- Red: the unity of the nation
- White: cotton, the country's main crop, and the snow and ice of its high mountains
- Green: the fertile valleys, which cover only a small part of this very mountainous country, and nature's gifts
- Crown: officially sovereignty and the Tajik people; people often say the name "Tajik" comes from a Persian word for crown, but that is disputed
- Seven stars: often explained as friendship among peoples; seven is also a number of perfection and happiness in Persian tradition
Where it came from
The flag was adopted on 24 November 1992, a year after independence from the Soviet Union, and was designed by Zuhur Habibullaev. It kept the colours and the long 1:2 shape of the Soviet-era flag of the Tajik republic, but dropped the hammer and sickle and added the crown and stars.
The stripes are 2, 3 and 2 parts tall, so the white stripe is one and a half times as wide as the others.
History
From 1953 the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic used a red flag with white and green stripes and the Soviet hammer, sickle and star. Tajikistan became independent on 9 September 1991 and was the last former Soviet country to adopt a new flag. Tajikistan celebrates 24 November as Flag Day.
