Name and tower

The name comes from an old promontory fort called Mothar, which stood at Hag's Head. It was still standing in 1780 but was pulled down in 1808 to supply stone for a lookout tower meant to warn of a possible French invasion.

O'Brien's Tower, a round stone tower near the middle of the cliffs, was built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O'Brien. A modern visitor centre was later built into the hillside.
