Quick answers

Where is Goldin Finance 117?

Goldin Finance 117 is in Tianjin, China.

How tall is Goldin Finance 117?

Goldin Finance 117 is about 597 m tall.

Goldin Finance 117, also called the China 117 Tower, is a supertall skyscraper in the Xiqing District of Tianjin, China. Its frame was topped out in 2015 at 597 metres, with 128 floors above ground. The name comes from the 117 of those floors that are meant for homes, a hotel and offices. It was the fifth-tallest building in the world when it topped out.

Work stopped for years, and the tower stood unfinished and empty, which earned it a Guinness World Record as the world's tallest unoccupied building. In April 2025 a new construction permit was issued and completion was set for 2027. In 2026 several large companies signed agreements to buy office floors in the tower.

A very tall pause

Construction began around 2008 and was due to finish in 2014. It was paused in January 2010 after the world financial crisis and restarted in 2011. The tower was topped out on 8 September 2015, but its owner, Goldin Properties, ran into money trouble after the June 2015 stock market crash and stopped work that December. The architects were P&T Group, and the contractor was China State Construction Engineering Corporation.

The tower was meant to be the centrepiece of the Goldin Metropolitan, a luxury development on the edge of the city.

Last of its kind

Because of this and other unfinished giant projects, the Chinese government banned new buildings taller than 500 metres. That means Goldin Finance 117 will be one of China's last 500-metre-plus towers for the foreseeable future.

The tower is designed to look like a walking stick, which is its nickname. Earlier designs looked like a fin and a diamond.

A tower coming back to life

In 2026 the Tianjin city leaders held talks with large state companies about reviving the project. In March and April, companies including CNOOC, CITIC Group, Lenovo and DiDi signed agreements to buy office space in the main tower and in related buildings.

In 2016 a Russian couple climbed the unfinished tower and filmed it, and the video drew attention around the world.
