Marina Bay Sands is a giant resort on the waterfront of Marina Bay in Singapore, a small island country at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. Its three 55-storey hotel towers are joined at the top by the Sands SkyPark, a long platform shaped a bit like a ship that rests across all three roofs about 200 metres above the ground.

Quick answers

Where is Marina Bay Sands?

Marina Bay Sands is in Singapore.

When was Marina Bay Sands built?

Marina Bay Sands was built in 2010.

How tall is Marina Bay Sands?

Marina Bay Sands is about 200 m tall.

An integrated resort of three hotel towers topped by a ship-like SkyPark and rooftop infinity pool.

The resort opened in 2010 and was designed by the architect Moshe Safdie, who said a deck of playing cards gave him the first idea. Besides about 1,850 hotel rooms, it has a huge convention centre, a shopping mall, theatres and the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum. Its unusual outline quickly became one of the best-known pictures of modern Singapore and appears in films and even video games.

The SkyPark

The SkyPark is about 340 metres long, longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall, and covers about 1.2 hectares, with gardens, restaurants and an observation deck. One end sticks out 66.5 metres past the north tower with nothing underneath. This kind of overhang is called a cantilever, and it is one of the longest public ones in the world. On the roof is a famous infinity pool, a pool whose edge seems to disappear into the sky. It is about 150 metres long and sits around 191 metres above the street, and only hotel guests may swim in it.

How it was built

Marina Bay Sands stands on land that was reclaimed from the sea, which means it was built up with filled-in sand and soil. The Korean company Ssangyong Engineering and Construction was the main builder. Rising costs and a shortage of workers slowed the project, and the total cost reached about 8 billion Singapore dollars, making it one of the most expensive resorts ever built. The three towers were topped out in 2009, and the resort opened in stages in 2010 and 2011.

Visiting today

Anyone can buy a ticket to the SkyPark Observation Deck for a 360-degree view over the bay and the city skyline. Next door, the ArtScience Museum looks like a lotus flower with ten curved "fingers", and holds exhibitions that mix art, science and technology. In the evening a free outdoor show called Spectra lights up the bay with lasers, fountains and music.
