Roppongi Hills Mori Tower is a 54-storey skyscraper in the Roppongi district of Minato, Tokyo. It is 238 metres tall and was completed in 2003. It is the centrepiece of the Roppongi Hills city development and is named after its builder, Minoru Mori. It is the twelfth-tallest building in Tokyo.
It is famous because it is a small city inside one tower. Shops and restaurants fill the first six floors, offices fill floors 7 to 48, and the Mori Arts Center with an art museum and observation decks crowns the top. Its floor area of about 379,000 square metres makes it one of the largest buildings in the world by that measure.
What is inside?
The Mori Arts Center takes up floors 49 to 54. It has a members-only library and club, the Tokyo City View indoor deck on the 52nd floor and an open-air roof deck on the 54th. The Mori Art Museum opened in October 2003 on the 53rd floor. The office floors host many companies, including the headquarters of the Pokémon Company on the 47th floor, and the headquarters of Mori Building Company is also in the tower.
Looking at the tower
The glass walls are split into overlapping plates, which people say resemble samurai armour. The tower was designed by the firm KPF. Its roof-deck view is higher than that of Tokyo Tower's main observation deck. Like any busy building it has had safety lessons: a fatal revolving-door accident in 2004 led to changes, and an elevator fire in 2007 stopped the lifts for a time.
