Salesforce Tower is a 61-storey skyscraper at 415 Mission Street in the South of Market district of San Francisco, California. It is 326 metres (1,070 feet) tall, counting its crown, and is the tallest building in San Francisco and the second-tallest in California. It was completed in 2018.

San Francisco's tallest building, whose LED crown displays a changing light artwork at night.

It was designed by the Argentine-American architect César Pelli, and it was one of the last buildings he finished before his death in 2019. The tower is shaped like an obelisk with a grid of metal fins running from bottom to top. At night, a public art light sculpture with 11,000 LEDs at the top shows video animations that can be seen from up to 50 kilometres away.

Designed to be gentle and green

Pelli said he wanted something "very tall, very big, but still polite and appropriate." The tower's outside is a curtain wall of glass and steel, and sunshades called brises-soleil on each floor bounce sunlight away. It also uses water-saving measures and special air intake systems, to count as a green building. It stands on land that was once part of the bay, so deep pillars reach down to bedrock.

Building the tower

The tower was planned as part of the Transbay redevelopment of the area around the new Salesforce Transit Center. In 2011 the old Transbay Terminal was fully demolished to start this plan, and in 2013 construction of the tower began. It was completed in 2018 at a cost of over $1.1 billion. Its main tenant is Salesforce, the cloud software company, and the building next to it is the transit station.
