Quick answers
Where is Texas State Capitol?
Texas State Capitol is in Austin, USA, United States.
When was Texas State Capitol built?
Texas State Capitol was built in 1888.
How tall is Texas State Capitol?
Texas State Capitol is about 92 m tall.
Built of sunset-red granite, its dome rises even higher than the US Capitol's.
At 92 metres (about 303 feet) tall, it is the sixth-tallest state capitol in the United States and is taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. It was built in the 1880s, and it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Its design dates from 1881, and visitors can still walk through it today.
How was it paid for?
The capitol was designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers and built from 1882 to 1888. Texas did not pay in cash. Instead, the builders, called the Capitol Syndicate, received more than three million acres of public land in the Texas Panhandle.
That land later became the XIT Ranch, the largest cattle ranch in the world. With expenses added, the original building cost about 3.7 million dollars.
Why is it made of red granite?
The plan was to use local limestone, but its high iron content left rust stains when it was exposed to the weather. Owners of Granite Mountain near Marble Falls then offered granite, and that is the stone you see on the building today.
The style is Italian Renaissance Revival. A large underground extension, finished in 1993, added more space without changing the look of the building above ground.
