Denver's landmark tower, nicknamed the "Cash Register Building" for its rounded top.

The nickname comes from the top, where the upper floors curve inwards and look like an old-fashioned cash register. The tower was designed by the architect Philip Johnson, under a master plan by I. M. Pei. It is the third tallest building in Denver, a little shorter than Republic Plaza and 1801 California Street.

Why does the roof need heating?

The tower was originally designed for a city in Texas, where snow is not a worry. In Denver, snow could pile up on the curved crown and then slide off dangerously. For that reason the roof has to be heated so the snow melts before it can fall. A skybridge over Lincoln Street connects the tower to the older Mile High Center, whose atrium is built in the same cash-register style.

Changes over the years

In 2012 a company called Beacon Capital Partners bought the building. A three-year renovation of the lobby was finished in 2016. It added an eight-story digital art installation in the glass atrium and works by the New York artist Enoc Perez, who made 14 paintings and 5 sculptures for the site. Like many office towers, the building lost tenants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
