June 20, 1819: Steamship Savannah crosses the Atlantic. On this day in 1819, the American ship Savannah reached the port of Liverpool, England. It was the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic. Yet its paddlewheels turned only for a short time, and most of the trip was made under sail. Hundreds of boats came out to greet it.
