Where it came from
The colours come from the African Democratic Rally, a political movement in French West Africa, which took them from Ghana's flag of 1957. They are the Pan-African colours, first used by Ethiopia.
Guinea became independent from France on 2 October 1958, and the flag was adopted with the first constitution on 10 November 1958.
History
Guinea's ruling party, the Democratic Party of Guinea, had already used the Pan-African colours since 1954.
Soon after independence Guinea joined Ghana in a union, which used a flag with both countries' colours and black stars; a third star was added when Mali joined in 1961. Guinea's own flag has stayed the same since 1958.
