California's white neoclassical capitol, its dome topped by a gilded ball.

A neoclassical building copies the look of ancient Greek and Roman buildings, with tall columns and a dome. The capitol's dome rises 64 metres, and it is topped by a lantern with a small dome and a gold-leaf ball on top. The Capitol was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and named a California Historical Landmark in 1974.

What is the building like?

Above the flat roof with its balustrade, a railing of small posts, sit two drums that support the dome. The first drum has a ring of Corinthian columns, and the second has Corinthian pilasters, which are flat columns attached to the wall. Large arched windows line the walls of the drums. On top of the dome stands a lantern with a smaller dome and a gold-leafed ball.

How has it changed over time?

Two earthquakes within days of each other in 1892 damaged the Capitol, even though Sacramento is not usually thought of as earthquake country. Between 1906 and 1908 it was remodeled, with seventy rooms and elevators added. From 1949 to 1952 the back part was demolished to make room for the Capitol Annex. A major restoration took place from 1975, and a museum run by California State Parks now fills part of the Capitol.
