Quick answers

Where is Flinders Street Station?

Flinders Street Station is in Melbourne, Australia.

When was Flinders Street Station built?

Flinders Street Station was built in 1909.

Melbourne's landmark railway station, known for its mustard facade, green dome and row of clocks.

The station opened in 1854, and it is the oldest station in Australia, though not in its current building. The present building was completed in 1909 and has been on the Victorian Heritage Register since 1982.

Meet me under the clocks

Above the main entrance is a row of indicator clocks showing the next departure for each train line. Melburnians say I'll meet you under the clocks, and some say I'll meet you on the steps, meaning the wide staircase just below them.

The station is also next to two of Melbourne's busiest pedestrian crossings. At one of them, at the junction with Elizabeth Street, pedestrians cross in every direction at once in what is called a scramble.

A busy history

Flinders Street was the end of the line for the first railway in Australia, the Port Melbourne line. In the 1920s it was reputedly the busiest passenger station in the world. Passenger numbers dropped after the Second World War, and the City Loop, opened in the 1980s, took some of the pressure off.

Today the main platform is Australia's second-longest and the eighteenth-longest in the world. The complex has 13 platforms stretching across more than two city blocks, and about 77,000 people passed through each day in 2017 and 2018.

Fun facts

  • 'Meet me under the clocks' is a famous Melbourne saying about its entrance.
