When was Great American Tower built?

How tall is Great American Tower?

Great American Tower is about 203 m tall.

Cincinnati's tallest building, crowned by a steel tiara inspired by Princess Diana's.

Its most famous feature is the top. A steel crown rings the roof and looks a little like a tiara. Cincinnati is nicknamed the Queen City, so the crown fits the name of the place. Half of the building is used as the headquarters of Great American Insurance Company, and the tower is faced with glass and aluminium. It was built by the Western and Southern Financial Group.

Where does the crown idea come from?

The architect, Gyo Obata, wanted a special top for the tower. He was looking through books when he found a photo of Diana, Princess of Wales, wearing a tiara. Someone from his firm pointed out that Cincinnati is called the Queen City, and the idea stuck. The building is faced in glass and aluminium, and the author of a book on Cincinnati architecture said the crown reminds her of the Chrysler Building.

How was it built?

The tower is on a site that city leaders had wanted to build on for about 20 years. Construction began in July 2008 and cost about 322 million dollars. It was the only American skyscraper built during the Great Recession, partly because building costs in Cincinnati were relatively low. It is 28 metres taller than the older Carew Tower, but the Carew Tower's roof is higher, so people still compare the two.
