A steel ski jump on a hill above Oslo, home to Nordic skiing competitions for over a century.

Ski contests have been held at Holmenkollen since 1892, when the first Holmenkollen Ski Festival took place. The hill hosted the 1952 Winter Olympics and the World Championships in 1930, 1966, 1982 and 2011. Since 1980 it has been part of the ski-jumping World Cup. The hill record is 144 metres, set by the Norwegian jumper Robert Johansson. The hill is part of the Holmenkollen National Arena, which also has cross-country and biathlon tracks.

Rebuilt again and again

The jump has been rebuilt 19 times. Important upgrades include a stone take-off in 1910 and a new in-run superstructure in 1914 and 1928. During the Second World War the site was used as a military installation. It was upgraded again in the late 1940s and expanded before the 1966 and 1982 championships and in 1991. The hill is also known for the Holmenkollen Ski Festival, a winter sports celebration.

The newest jump

Between 2008 and 2010 the entire structure was torn down and rebuilt. The modern jump is made of steel, and it rises high above the city. The older story of the hill began when I. C. L. Holm saw the potential of the area for recreation and opened hotels and a sports lodge there. Sources describe its height as roughly 60 metres.
