Hong Kong's tallest building, with a hotel and the sky100 observation deck near its top.
The tower sits above the Elements shopping mall and near two MTR stations, and its south side faces Victoria Harbour. When it was finished it was the fourth-tallest building in the world. It was also the fourth-tallest building in Asia at that time, and the American firm Kohn Pedersen Fox designed it.
Smaller than planned
The first plan was called Kowloon Station Phase 7 and would have been 574 metres tall, tall enough to be the tallest building in China. But rules did not allow buildings to be taller than the surrounding mountains, so the height was scaled back. The American firm Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the tower with the local firm Wong and Ouyang.
Where is floor 4?
The top floor is numbered 118 even though there are 108 storeys, because many numbers were skipped. Floor numbers ending in 4 are left out since the number sounds like "death" in Cantonese and Mandarin, a bit like the fear of 13 in the West. According to Korean Wikipedia, the sky100 observation deck is on the 100th floor, at about 394 metres, and a hotel fills the top floors.
