Quick answers
Where is Lake Bled?
Lake Bled is in Bled, Slovenia.
An Alpine lake with a tiny church-topped island and a medieval castle perched on a cliff.
The lake is famous for a picture-book view: a tiny island in the middle topped by a church with a tall bell tower, and a medieval castle perched on a cliff above the shore. Bled Island is the only natural island in Slovenia. Visitors cross to it in traditional wooden boats, climb its stone steps and ring a wishing bell. The lake is also a well-known venue for rowing races.
The island and its church
On Bled Island stands the pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, sometimes called the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake. A church was first recorded here in the 12th century, and the building you see today mostly dates from the late 1600s, with a bell tower 52 metres tall. A Baroque stone stairway built in 1655, with 99 steps, leads from the landing up to the church. Inside hangs a wishing bell: local tradition says that if you ring it, your wish may come true.
Bled Castle
Bled Castle sits on a steep cliff about 130 metres above the water. It was first mentioned in a document from 1011, when Emperor Henry II gave the land to the bishops of Brixen, making it the oldest castle in Slovenia that we know of from written records. The bishops owned it for about eight centuries. Its oldest part is a Romanesque tower, and today the castle holds a museum about the history of the lake, with wide views of the island and the Alps.
Visiting today
The classic way to reach the island is by pletna, a flat-bottomed wooden boat that seats about 20 people. An oarsman rows it standing up at the back, using a technique passed down through families; in 1740 Empress Maria Theresa gave 22 local families the sole right to ferry pilgrims. In summer a warm spring helps the water reach about 22 to 26°C, good for swimming. Afterwards, many visitors try Bled's famous cream cake, the kremšnita.
Fun facts
- Exactly 99 stone steps lead from the island's landing up to its church.
- The pletna boats have been rowed across the lake since at least the late 1500s, and many of today's oarsmen descend from the original boat families.
- Bled Castle was first written about in the year 1011, more than 1,000 years ago.
- The World Rowing Championships have been held at Lake Bled four times: in 1966, 1979, 1989 and 2011.
- Bled's official cream cake recipe dates from 1953, and one hotel bakery alone made about 12 million of them in 60 years.
