A postmodern pink-granite tower with a Gothic pyramid crown, also known as the IBM Tower.
It is covered in pink Spanish granite and ends in a copper pyramid with a gold peak. At night the peak and the ridges along the top are brightly lit, creating a glowing effect. Its design uses touches of the Gothic style and was influenced by the Tribune Tower in Chicago, especially in the base and the main body.
A tower that built a district
Prentiss Properties commissioned the tower as the southeastern headquarters for IBM. It stood at the then-remote corner of 14th and West Peachtree Street, over a mile from Downtown, yet it opened almost fully occupied. That attracted other developers and helped create what is now the Midtown commercial district. It also introduced Atlanta to the postmodern architecture style of the 1980s.
How it was built
The architects were Johnson/Burgee Architects, and Heery International produced the building documents. The local engineer Blake Van Leer, who worked on most of the major skyline projects of the 1970s and 80s, was the lead engineer. When its slender concrete core was finished in October 1986, it was the tallest slipformed skyscraper in the country. In slipforming, the concrete form is moved upward steadily while concrete is poured. Both Atlantic Center towers were built by HCBeck, now called The Beck Group.
The Mini Me next door
In 2001 a much shorter building, Regions Plaza, was finished across the street as the second phase of the Atlantic Center development. Its design is so similar that Atlantans fondly call it the Mini Me building, named after the tiny clone of Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers movies. IBM eventually sold the tower in the 1990s, when companies focused on owning less real estate. Today law and consulting firms such as Alston & Bird and KPMG are among its tenants.
