Quick answers

Where is Truist Plaza?

Truist Plaza is in Atlanta, USA, United States.

When was Truist Plaza built?

Truist Plaza was built in 1992.

How tall is Truist Plaza?

Truist Plaza is about 265 m tall.

A dark-granite skyscraper with a stepped, pinnacled Gothic crown (formerly SunTrust Plaza).

It was finished in 1992 and designed by the Atlanta architect John C. Portman Jr. The name has changed over the years: first One Peachtree Center, then SunTrust Plaza, and since 2021 Truist Plaza. Its tall, dark shape and the rotating light at its top make it a familiar part of the Atlanta night skyline.

A tough start

Portman planned the tower in the 1980s building boom as an office building for rent. Digging began in 1989, but by the time it opened in 1992 Atlanta's property market had crashed and the building sat mostly empty. That nearly bankrupted Portman and cost him control of many of his buildings.

Things improved in the mid-1990s, when SunTrust Bank bought part of it and moved its headquarters in. The bank gave the building its next name. In 2021 SunTrust merged with another bank, BB&T, and the tower became Truist Plaza.

Falcons on the balcony

Peregrine falcons, the fastest birds on Earth, have nested in planters on a balcony more than fifty stories up since 1997. Up there they are far from predators, and the soil in the planters is soft enough for a nest.

The state wildlife agency of Georgia runs a web camera so people can watch the falcons' nest. The balcony is private, so nobody can visit it.

Fun facts

  • Peregrine falcons have nested high on the tower since 1997.
  • When it was finished in 1992 it was the 28th tallest building in the world.
  • The tower is also known by its address, 303 Peachtree.
  • A tornado hit downtown Atlanta in March 2008 and broke some of its windows.
