Quick answers

Where is One Vanderbilt?

One Vanderbilt is in New York, USA, United States.

When was One Vanderbilt built?

One Vanderbilt was built in 2020.

How tall is One Vanderbilt?

One Vanderbilt is about 427 m tall.

One Vanderbilt is a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, right beside Grand Central Terminal. It has 62 floors, and its roof is about 397 metres high while its spire reaches 427 metres, which made it the city's fourth-tallest building when it opened in 2020. The architects were Kohn Pedersen Fox, and the developer was SL Green Realty.

The tower tapers as it rises and steps up through several "pavilions" to a glass crown and spire. Its walls are mostly glass with bands of terracotta, a baked-clay material. At the top is SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, an observation deck that opened in 2021.

How it fits in

The designers wanted the new tower to blend with Grand Central, the grand train station next door. The base has a wedge-shaped open space, and the lobby has a direct entrance to the station and the subway. Some rooms inside are up to 32 metres high. The building replaced five older buildings, and a few ornate details from one of them, such as terracotta porpoises and cherubs, were saved and later reused elsewhere.

Building timeline

SL Green bought the site over about ten years, from 2001 to 2011, and announced the plan in 2012. A zoning change failed in 2013, which delayed the project, but the skyscraper was approved in 2015 and construction started in October 2016. It reached its top on 17 September 2019. The coronavirus pandemic slowed the finish, and the tower opened in September 2020, with the observation deck following 13 months later.

Fun facts

  • Its spire reaches 427 metres, about 30 metres more than the roof.
  • The lobby connects straight to Grand Central Terminal and the subway.
  • Its walls are glass with bands of terracotta, a baked-clay material.
  • Terracotta porpoises and cherubs from an old building on the site were saved before it was demolished.
