History
The Australian architect Donald Crone designed the tower, and the first plans were shown in 1968. Tower building began in 1975, and the public could go up from 25 September 1981. The cost was A$36 million. Before it was built, Sydney's height limit was 279 metres so that flying boats could use the harbour. A lightning rod added in 1998 made the tower 309 metres tall instead of 305. It has had several names, including AMP Tower, because of the companies that owned or ran it.
Visiting today
Visitors ride elevators to the observation deck, which is almost 30 metres higher than the deck of Auckland's taller Sky Tower. There is also a revolving dining area and an outdoor experience called Skywalk. The shopping centre at the base, now Westfield Sydney, was closed for a big rebuild in 2009 and reopened step by step from 2010.
