When was Chifley Tower built?

How tall is Chifley Tower?

Chifley Tower is about 244 m tall.

Chifley Tower is a 53-storey skyscraper at 2 Chifley Square in the middle of Sydney, Australia. At 244 meters (801 feet) it was the tallest building in the city from 1992 until 2019. Its pinkish stone walls, a glass cylinder running up one corner and a stepped top with a glass lantern make it easy to pick out.

It was designed by the New York firm Kohn Pedersen Fox together with Travis McEwen. The square it stands on is named after Ben Chifley, a prime minister of Australia, and the tower took its name from the square.

Why is it called Chifley Tower?

The tower was first called Bond Tower, after the businessman Alan Bond. After Bond went bankrupt, a new owner took over the building, and in 1993 it was renamed after Chifley Square, the public space beside it.

The square was planned in the early 1900s as a grand plaza in the style of Paris, and the tower's curved base follows the curve of the older Qantas House across the way. A flat, giant sculpture of Ben Chifley stands in the plaza.

Is it still the tallest?

Not any more. Sydney kept growing upward, and Crown Sydney at 271 meters passed it in 2020. Salesforce Tower (263 meters) and One Sydney Harbour (247 meters) followed in 2022, so Chifley Tower is now the fourth tallest in the city.

It was built on an odd-shaped plot where two skewed street grids meet, and it holds offices plus a shopping arcade in its base called Chifley Plaza.
