The world's tallest regular pentagonal building, standing on Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
What makes it stand out is its shape. It is the world's tallest regular pentagonal building, meaning its plan is a five-sided shape with equal sides. It houses the headquarters of the Maryland Port Administration. Planning started in April 1966, construction began in October 1973, and it was finished in January 1977 for about 22 million dollars.
Why is it positioned this way?
The architects, Pei Cobb Freed and Partners, with Henry Cobb and Pershing Wong in charge, set the building so that one corner points toward the water. This makes the tower look like the prow of a ship. From some spots on the harbour it seems to rise straight out of the water. The side facing the city is a flat wall across a wide plaza.
The lights and the view
At night, xenon spotlights at the base of each of the five corners light the building from the ground up. Large curved mirrors at the top reflect the light outward in V-shaped beams, a bit like a lighthouse. The lighting can be seen from seven to ten miles away in good weather. On the 27th floor, an enclosed viewing level called Top of the World gives a 360-degree view of the city.
