A gleaming white terra-cotta landmark with a clock tower inspired by Seville's Giralda.
It is famous for its gleaming white walls, which are covered in glazed terra cotta, and for its elaborate style. The architects based the clock tower on the Giralda tower of Seville Cathedral and added French Renaissance details. At night floodlights make it glow.
Why was it built here?
When work began in 1920, there were no major office buildings north of the Chicago River, and the nearby Michigan Avenue Bridge was still being built. William Wrigley Jr., the chewing-gum businessman, chose the land for his company headquarters. The south tower was finished in September 1921 and the north tower in May 1924. Walkways join the towers at street level and the third floor, and one was added at the fourteenth floor in 1931.
Cool details
Each of the four clock faces is about 6 metres across. The building was Chicago's first air-conditioned office building. The white terra cotta is sometimes washed by hand to keep it clean. Through the middle doors there is a quiet small park overlooking the Chicago River. In a 1957 science-fiction film, Beginning of the End, giant grasshoppers climb its side. It was sold in 2011 and again in 2019.
