August 3, 1914: First ship through the Panama Canal. On 3 August 1914, the steamship Cristóbal became the first ship to pass through the Panama Canal from ocean to ocean. Before the canal, ships had to sail all the way around the tip of South America. The canal officially opened on 15 August.
