What it means

Where it came from

The red background comes from the red flag of the Alawi dynasty, which has ruled Morocco since the 1600s. Red was also used by the sharifs of Mecca.

On 17 November 1915 Sultan Yusef added the green star by royal decree. The decree calls the star the seal of Solomon.

History

When the Alawi dynasty came to power, its flag is said to have been plain red. In the French and Spanish protectorate period (1912-1956), the flag could not be used at sea.

After independence in 1956 it became the flag at sea as well. A 2005 law on national symbols set its exact geometry.
