Chase Tower is a 40-story skyscraper at 201 North Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It opened in 1972 and stands 147 m (483 ft) tall, making it the tallest building in Arizona, a record it has held since 1972. It was designed by the architects Welton Becket and Fred M. Guirey.

The tower was first built for Valley National Bank, which was later bought by Bank One, and then Chase. It was renamed Chase Tower in December 2005, and was earlier called Valley Bank Center and Bank One Center. The top of its elevator core is the highest point.

An unusual shape

Seen from above, its footprint looks like a three-leaf clover with a stem. The stem is the narrow elevator core on the south side, which has a rough concrete texture and is the tallest part of the building.

The three leaves, or wings, are 34, 38 and 36 floors high. The rest of the outside is a glass curtain wall, and the tower takes up a whole city block.

Changing owners

The highest floor people can use is the 38th. An observation area on the 39th floor was once open to the public but closed during construction work.

Chase moved most of its staff to a new campus in Tempe in 2021. The building was sold in 2007 for about $166.9 million and again in 2018 out of foreclosure for $79 million.
