Quick answers
Where is Sans-Souci Palace?
Sans-Souci Palace is in Milot, Haiti.
When was Sans-Souci Palace built?
Sans-Souci Palace was built in 1813.
Ruins of King Henri Christophe's palace; its grand staircase and walls survived the 1842 earthquake.
The palace and the Citadelle together are Haitian icons and world symbols of liberty, and they were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Today the palace is an empty ruin, but its grand staircase and tall walls still show how splendid it once was.
A palace of a new kingdom
After the revolution, Christophe ruled northern Haiti as king. Sans-Souci was the most important of nine palaces he ordered, along with fifteen châteaux and many forts. The king, Queen Marie-Louise and their children lived here with advisors. There were opulent feasts and dances, big gardens, artificial springs and a system of waterworks. A visiting American doctor said it had the reputation of being one of the most magnificent buildings in the West Indies.
What happened to it?
The name means 'carefree' in French, and it is shared with Jean-Baptiste Sans Souci, a revolutionary leader whom Christophe had killed in 1803, close to where the palace was later built. A severe earthquake in 1842 destroyed much of the palace and badly hit the nearby city of Cap-Haïtien, and the palace was never rebuilt. No one knows how many workers died during construction under Christophe's harsh rule.
