A green steel suspension bridge over the Willamette with cathedral-like Gothic towers.
Its two Gothic-style towers are about 120 metres (400 feet) tall, the tallest of any bridge in Portland, and the main span between them is 368 metres (1,207 feet) long. Cathedral Park gets its name from the pointed arches in the towers and supports, which look like those of a cathedral.
History
Engineers David B. Steinman and Holton D. Robinson designed it. At that time it was the longest suspension-type bridge west of the Mississippi River. Before it was built, a ferry carried about 1,000 vehicles a day. Voters approved a $4.25 million bond in 1928. A cantilever bridge was first proposed, but a suspension bridge saved about $640,000. Building started a month before the 1929 stock market crash and gave local people jobs during the Great Depression.
Facts and figures
The bridge is 630 metres (2,067 feet) long in total, and ships can pass beneath it with a clearance of 62 metres. It is the only suspension bridge in the Willamette Valley and one of only three major highway suspension bridges in Oregon. The bridge is named after St. Johns, the community at its east end, which was once its own city before Portland took it in.
