Pakistan is a large country in South Asia. It stretches from the Arabian Sea in the south to some of the highest mountains on Earth in the north, and it borders India, China, Afghanistan and Iran. Its capital is Islamabad, and its biggest city is Karachi. With well over 200 million people, it is one of the most populous countries in the world.
Pakistan is known for towering peaks such as K2, the mighty Indus River, ancient cities and colourful bazaars. On the globe you can visit the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, the tent-shaped Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi, the Minar-e-Pakistan tower and the old Frere Hall.
Geography and nature
The north of Pakistan is a land of giants. The Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush ranges meet here, and K2, the second-highest mountain in the world at 8,611 metres, stands on the border with China. The Indus River flows down from these mountains through the whole country to the Arabian Sea, watering the wide, flat plains of Punjab and Sindh where most people live. The west has dry plateaus and deserts. Wild animals include the snow leopard and the markhor, a wild goat with spiral horns that is the national animal.
People, languages and culture
Urdu is the national language and English is also official, but many people grow up speaking Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Saraiki or Balochi. Almost everyone is Muslim. Cricket is by far the most popular sport, and Pakistan won the Cricket World Cup in 1992. People love spicy dishes like biryani and nihari, and sweet milky tea called chai. Trucks are often painted in bright patterns and hung with chains and bells, a folk art known as truck art.
History in a nutshell
About 4,500 years ago, the Indus Valley Civilization built well-planned cities such as Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, with brick houses and drains. Later the region was part of many empires, including the Mughal Empire, which built the Badshahi Mosque in the 1670s. Britain later ruled the area as part of British India. In 1947 British India was divided, and Pakistan became an independent country, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In 1971 its eastern part became the separate country of Bangladesh.
