Mazar-e-Quaid, also called the Jinnah Mausoleum or National Mausoleum, is the tomb of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, in the city of Karachi. In Urdu its name means "Tomb of the Leader." It was finished in 1971 and is one of the best-known symbols of Karachi and one of its most popular places to visit.
It stands in the Jamshed Quarters in central Karachi, at the end of Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road, inside a large garden in the neo-Mughal style. Traffic circles sit at three of the garden's four corners. The design is mostly traditional, with a light touch of modern style.
Who is buried here?
Besides Jinnah, the complex holds the tomb of his sister Fatima Jinnah, known as the "Mother of the Nation." It also holds the graves of Liaquat Ali Khan and Nurul Amin, Pakistan's first and eighth prime ministers, and of Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, a leader of the Muslim League from Peshawar. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Karachi, for tourists and local families alike.
How was it built?
Jinnah died in 1948, and at first his grave was marked by a plain marble slab. By 1952 a small dome stood over it. Many people were unhappy about the neglected site, so a more fitting monument was planned. After an international design competition in 1957, the mausoleum was built from 1960 to 1971. The card on this globe describes a white marble cube with a tall pointed arch on each side, topped with a dome.
