Quick answers
Where is Antilia?
Antilia is in Mumbai, India.
When was Antilia built?
Antilia was built in 2010.
How tall is Antilia?
Antilia is about 173 m tall.
Antilia is the home of the Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani and his family. It stands on Billionaires' Row in Mumbai, India. It was built from 2006 to 2010 at a cost of nearly two billion US dollars, and it was valued at about 4.6 billion dollars in 2023. It is the most expensive home in India and one of the most expensive and largest private homes in the world.
The tower has 27 storeys and is 173 metres tall, though each floor has extra-high ceilings, so a building of this height could normally hold up to about 60 floors. It is designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude eight. The top six floors are the family's private living areas, and the design takes ideas from the lotus plant and the sun.
What is inside?
Antilia covers more than 37,000 square metres of floor space. It has a garage for 168 cars, a ballroom, nine high-speed lifts, a 50-seat theatre, terrace gardens, a swimming pool, a spa, a health centre, a temple and even a "snow room" that makes snowflakes from its walls. There are three helipads, but they have not been approved for use.
Design and name
The building is named after Antillia, a mythical phantom island that old maps once showed in the Atlantic. It was designed by the American firms Perkins & Will and Hirsch Bedner Associates. The lotus and sun shapes appear all through the house in crystal, marble and mother-of-pearl, yet no two floors use the same materials or plan.
Some people call it the tallest single-family house in the world, but others disagree because it also has space for a staff of 600.
Where is it and why is it famous?
The house sits on a plot of about 4,500 square metres that once held an orphanage run by a charity founded in 1895. The land was sold to a company controlled by Ambani in 2002, and the sale was disputed in court for years, which added to the building's fame.
The housewarming took place in November 2010. The family waited until 2011, after priests held ceremonies to bless the building, before moving in.
