A Christ statue with open arms atop a hill over Cochabamba, taller than Rio's Christ the Redeemer.
It was built between 1987 and 1994 and was modelled on the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When it was finished, it became the largest statue of Jesus in the world. Its arms stretch wide, and the left hand points south while the right hand points north. Cochabamba itself is a city in a valley of the Andes, nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring for its mild weather all year.
Taller than Rio's statue
The plan was for the statue to be exactly 33 metres, one metre for each year of Jesus's life. But 44 centimetres of neat hair were added on top, which made it taller than its brother in Rio. People in Cochabamba joke that this is because Jesus lived a little past 33.
It was designed by César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo, and building began on 12 July 1987 and finished on 20 November 1994.
How big is it?
The statue weighs about 2,200 tonnes. The head alone is 4.64 metres tall and weighs 11,850 kilograms, and the arms span 32.87 metres. Its surface area is about 2,400 square metres.
Climbing inside
Inside the arms there is a viewing area, reached by 1,399 stairs, but visitors are allowed to climb them only on Sundays.
Today it is no longer the biggest. The Christ the King statue in Świebodzin, Poland, is only slightly smaller at about 36 metres with its crown, but a 61-metre statue of Jesus in North Sumatra, Indonesia, was completed in 2024.
