A faceted green-glass prism by I. M. Pei's firm, famous for the fountains of its plaza.
It is a big, many-sided prism of green glass, so it looks completely different from every direction. The tower is named for the 172 dancing fountains in the plaza around its base. The dancing fountains were one of the first projects of that size. In 2020 Tenet Healthcare, which had its headquarters here, moved out of the tower, which had announced in 2008 that it would move here.
The fountains
The fountains were a huge project and a first of their kind on such a large scale. WET Design, a company founded by former Disney designers, worked on it, and this was the company's first major project after its founders left Disney.
A water show runs automatically, with the fountains as the centerpiece. The people who built them called the fountains an extreme undertaking.
A twin that never was
The original plan called for twin towers, with the second tower turned 90 degrees and built across the garden. But the Texas oil, banking and real estate crash of the 1980s stopped it.
Later, a 45-story residential tower called AMLI Fountain Place was built nearby, with an outside designed to echo the original office tower, like the twin that never was.
