A granite-clad postmodern tower with a stepped, gabled crown.
The famous architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee designed it in the postmodern style, which mixes modern building methods with decoration borrowed from older buildings. It started life as Momentum Place and has carried several bank names since, so the tower is a handy reminder that buildings often outlive their first owners.
History
The tower was built as the headquarters of MCorp Bank, on a downtown block that once held department stores. The whole block was cleared in the mid-1980s, building began in 1985, and the tower opened in 1987. Johnson's first plan also included hotels and a big shopping mall, but the bank wanted a plainer office tower, so the design was scaled back.
Hard times followed. MCorp collapsed soon after the opening, and the building went through two big foreclosures, in 1991 and 1995. New owners bought it in 1997, and in 2007 the bank Comerica chose it for its new headquarters, which is where the current name comes from.
Why it's famous
The tower is a clear example of 1980s postmodern skyscraper design, and its stepped, gabled top is easy to spot on the Dallas skyline. It holds about 100,000 square meters of office space, roughly the size of fourteen soccer fields.
It also carries a mild record. Dallas's tallest buildings are measured with and without their antennas, and if the antennas of Renaissance Tower were left out, Comerica Bank Tower would count as the city's second tallest.
Fun facts
- The tower has had at least four names: Momentum Place, Bank One Center, Chase Center and Comerica Bank Tower.
- It was the last high-rise finished in downtown Dallas in the 1980s.
- The block it stands on was once crowded with department stores that were torn down to make room.
- It is the sixth tallest building in Texas.
