According to legend, this is the place where Genghis Khan found a golden whip. The statue is covered in stainless steel and points east, toward the region where he was born. It opened in 2008, and it sits on top of a visitor centre, so the whole monument is taller than the statue alone suggests.

It opened in 2008 to honour the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Mongol Empire. The cost of the complex was reported to be about 4.1 million U.S. dollars.

Can you go inside?

Yes. Visitors can walk through the horse's chest and neck and come out at its head, where there is a viewing deck with a wide view of the grassy plain around it.

The statue's eastward gaze looks toward the Khentii region, Genghis Khan's birthplace. The setting is the open steppe beside the Tuul River, so the huge silver figure can be seen from far away.
