Opening and traffic
The bridge opened temporarily for the 2002 Asian Games, from late September to mid-October 2002, and officially opened in January 2003. Tolls began in 2003.
It has two decks. Traffic toward Centum City uses the lower deck, and traffic toward Namcheon-dong uses the upper deck. The tolls started in March 2003, and in 2007 it became a road only for motor vehicles.
Built to be tough
It was designed to survive a strong earthquake, typhoon winds of about 45 meters per second and waves 7 meters high.
In February 2019, a Russian cargo ship that had left Busan port hit the bridge. It tore a five-meter hole in the lower deck, but nobody was hurt. The bridge was built to keep the heavy port traffic moving and ease jams in Suyeong and Haeundae.
