Building a memorial

Neto died in Moscow in 1979, and the Soviet Union was asked to build the mausoleum. The first stones were laid on 17 September 1982, which would have been his 60th birthday.

Work stopped in the late 1980s because of Angola's civil war and the end of the Soviet Union. It restarted in 2005, was completed in January 2011, and opened on 17 September 2012.
