Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is in Nadi, Fiji.
When was Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple built?
Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple was built in 1994.
The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is a Hindu temple in Nadi, a town on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. It is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere. It stands at the southern end of the main road through Nadi and is both an important place of worship and a popular spot for visitors.
The temple honours Lord Murugan, also called Subramaniya. It was built in the Dravidian style, a style from South India, by craftsmen who came from India. Its colourful towers, called gopurams, are covered with painted figures. The new temple was blessed in a ceremony on 15 July 1994.
How did the temple grow?
An older temple had stood on the site for a long time, and a religious group formed there in 1926. In 1976, at a Golden Jubilee celebration, the foundation of a larger temple was laid. A new lease for the land was gained in 1983, and rebuilding began in January 1984 with a prayer ceremony. The work picked up speed after a pause of about five years. The temple follows the Dravidian style and the Vastu rules of sacred building.
Visiting the temple
Visitors are welcome. Guided tours are available, though the inner sanctums, the holiest rooms, are only for worshippers. The temple grounds have a restaurant serving traditional vegetarian dishes. In 2026, the centenary of the religious group, artists from Tamil Nadu in India travelled to Nadi to repaint and restore its carvings and artworks. Keeping such a colourful temple fresh in the tropical sun takes careful work, because so many of the carvings are painted by hand.
