Quick answers
Where is Christ Church Cathedral, Stanley?
Christ Church Cathedral, Stanley is in Stanley, Falkland Islands.
When was Christ Church Cathedral, Stanley built?
Christ Church Cathedral, Stanley was built in 1892.
The southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world, with the Whalebone Arch, made from the jawbones of blue whales, standing in front.
The cathedral was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, built from local stone and brick between 1890 and 1892, and consecrated, which means formally blessed, on 21 February 1892. Inside are stained-glass windows, a ring of five bells in the tower and a pipe organ built in Ireland, and special services mark days such as Liberation Day on 14 June.
Why was it built here?
The new cathedral stands on the site of an earlier church, Holy Trinity, which was destroyed in 1886 when a slide of wet peat crushed part of Stanley. The cathedral that replaced it has a tower with a ring of five bells, stained-glass windows and a two-manual pipe organ built in Ireland.
It has some famous keepsakes. One is the Garter banner of Lord Shackleton, and another is a White Ensign, a navy flag, flown by HMS Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939.
The Whalebone Arch
The arch in front was put up in 1933 to mark 100 years of British rule in the Falkland Islands. It is made of the jaws of two blue whales, the largest animals that have ever lived.
The cathedral also marks the center of Stanley's voting area. The edge of the Stanley constituency is set at a distance of 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) from its spire.
