Vladivostok, a port city in Russia's Far East, has two big cable-stayed bridges that were finished for the 2012 APEC summit. The Golden Bridge (Zolotoy) crosses the Golden Horn Bay, and the Russky Bridge crosses the Eastern Bosphorus strait to Russky Island.
The Russky Bridge has a central span of 1,104 meters (3,622 feet), the second longest of any cable-stayed bridge in the world as of 2025, and when it opened in 2012 it was the longest. A cable-stayed bridge hangs its road from tall towers by straight cables fanned out like harp strings. Its two A-shaped towers are about 320 metres high. The globe shows the two bridges with their towers and spreading cables.
The Golden Bridge
In 1959 the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev asked for Vladivostok to be made the 'San Francisco of the USSR'. A bridge across the bay was added to the city plan in 1969 but never built. The city commissioned the present bridge in 2006.
The Golden Bridge was started on July 25, 2008, and opened in August 2012. It is considered the 14th longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. The bridge turned a trip from the city center to Cape Churkin from 1.5 to 2 hours into just 5 to 10 minutes.
The Russky Bridge
The Russky Bridge links Russky Island with the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula. The two coasts are 1,460 meters apart, and the channel is up to 50 meters deep. It was built in a harsh climate where temperatures run from minus 31 to plus 37 degrees Celsius, winds reach 36 meters per second, and winter ice can be 70 centimeters thick.
Its A-shaped towers are the second-highest bridge pylons in the world after the Millau Viaduct in France, and its cables are the longest.
How the towers were built
Piles were driven as deep as 77 meters into the ground, and 120 drilled piles sit under each tower on the island side. The concrete was poured in sections of 4.5 meters, using forms that climb up by themselves.
Because the towers are A-shaped, ordinary forms could not be used, so each tower got its own set. The self-climbing forms cut the building time of the concrete parts by a third.
